Despite Farting being a social no no, it is a normal part of life. It is estimated that the average person passes up to 14 farts a day or half a liter of gas daily.
Some farts are extra smelly and can be unpleasant (especially for others!), so what makes them smell bad?
What are farts made of?
Most of the fart is made of swallowed air. The oxygen in the swallowed air is absorbed in the blood stream, with the nitrogen and carbon dioxide passing through as wind. Carbon dioxide from bacteria produced in our intestines is also thrown in the mix, with the same bacteria sometimes also producing methane and hydrogen.
What causes them to smell?
The food you eat will affect how your farts smell.
Hydrogen sulphide gas comes from the intestines, and its smell can be intensified depending on what you eat.
Foods that usually intensify the stink are rich in sulphur and include broccoli, cabbage, eggs and some meats. Beans on the other hand produce more gas, which will increase the amounts of farts you have although will be generally odourless.
Conclusion
Unfortunately we can’t completely avoid farts (we need to eat and breath!) what you can do is note down what foods make your farts smell really bad and then avoid eating them before a big date or job interview!
Smelly farts can also be caused due to other factors, so if your farts constantly smell bad for a long period of time it is best that you visit a GP. For help to find a doctor close to you, visit www.doctors.com.au.
